Split is a psychological “horror” movie revolving around an antagonist who suffers from dissociative identity disorder or DID(formerly known as multiple personality disorder). We follow Kevin Crumb as his different identities, together known as “The Horde” abduct three teenage girls to feed to a mysterious 24th identity known as “The Beast”.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
1. It gives a different perspective. A lot of people don’t realize the struggle others dealing with a mental illness go through, and honestly this is really sad. But Split gives the audience a peek behind the curtain and shows how people affected by DID live.
2. An interesting aspect this movie explores is the different identities interacting with each other. This is shown at first by showing a few of them talking to each other.
3. Another symptom of DID which I never thought about is how different identities suddenly “wake up” in different places with having no recollection of how they got there. It’s fascinating to learn how victims of DID deal with this inconvenience of losing time.
4. This film also displays one account of how DID is developed. In this case it is developed as a coping mechanism to early childhood trauma. The individual develops a different identity which would have been able to prevent that specific trauma in order to protect themselves from future trauma.
5. This movie provides additional knowledge and creates even more intrigue in regards to dissociative identity disorder.
6. What puts this film at the top of psychological thriller list is the actor behind these different characters. James McAvoy switches between the numerous identities of Kevin Crumb within seconds without skipping a beat. He is the reason why this movie is so immersive and feels so real.
If you haven’t seen Split, I would highly recommend it. It’s a great psychological horror movie to get into the genre, truthfully it’s not even scary. Watch Split on Amazon here! If you’d like to see what other movies I recommend. click here.
