Minecraft – Top 5 Reasons We’re Still Playing

Minecraft - Top 5 Reasons We're Still Playing

Jonathon Andrews

Minecraft is an open world game, primarily based around placing 3D blocks. And honestly, for a game with such a simple concept, it can be mind-boggling to understand how it can still be so popular and relevant over 10 years later. I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 reasons why gamers have returned to Minecraft.

1. Minecraft Gives A Fresh Experience Every Time

Unlike replaying Skyrim for the thousandth time, you aren’t greeted by the same cutscene every playthrough. Each time you generate a new world, it’s completely different from the last. Each world is procedurally generated which guarantees a new biome to explore.

2. Play However You Want

Minecraft doesn’t force the player into anything. There are different game modes to choose from depending on your preferred play style.

Creative Mode

Creative Mode allows the player to build any objects without having the necessary materials they’d normally require. It also grants invincibility and the ability to fly. Another advantage to this mode is passive mobs, or enemies that don’t attack the player.

Survival Mode

Survival Mode is a complete contradiction to Creative Mode. In this game mode, the player needs to eat, and gather supplies to progress. While surviving hunger, the player needs to avoid mobs of creatures who will attack as soon as it becomes dusk within the game. The best way to survive the night is to build a house with a bed, and then rest until the morning.

3. Building

One of the best things about coming back to Minecraft is being able to build literally anything. It’s easy to build a simple, one room house. But it takes true dedication to build a stone fortress, and impenetrable by mobs. It can even include all of the little details, such as bowls on a dining room table. The creativity can just pour out of the player and be able to create almost anything.

4. Farming/Hunting

Once you build a home, you need to think about gathering food. Depending on the randomly generated environment, you might be able to mine certain plants and start growing more crops from seeds. If not, you should be able to find animals to kill and cook. However, if you find yourself surrounded by water, craft a fishing rod and eat the fish you catch.

5. Survival

In recent years, survival games have increased in popularity. This is another reason why Minecraft has kept such a large fanbase. Games are constantly created with “Survival Mode” now. And some popular games are re-released with a survival mode add-on, such as Skyrim.

Overall

Minecraft has stood the test of time, because its concept is remarkably simple. Its mechanics are relatively easy to understand, and overall it appeals to a huge audience, no matter the player’s preferred play style.
