Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a simulation game available on the Nintendo Switch that takes place on a deserted island. Throughout the game you can create farms, build houses, catch bugs, fish, and more!
1. Build your dream house!
There is a lot of variety in the furniture you can craft. You can choose to have a simple home with the standard kitchen, bathroom etc. or you can have themed rooms based on whatever interests you. Any animals you catch can also be placed inside your home, making it the perfect aquarium or butterfly sanctuary.
2. Visit Your Friends’ Island
After you setup your island with your tent, you can use the airport at the south-end of your island. If you have Nintendo Switch Online, you can visit your friends’ islands to check out what they have built. They could even have a different native fruit than your island does, so make sure you shake a few trees to plant when you fly back home.
3. Seasonal Events/Celebrating Holidays
Animal Crossing takes place in real time, based on your time zone that you input when starting it for the first time. This means it also has access to the date, allowing the game to incorporate seasonal decorations. They sell all kinds of decorations for your home and island, the in-game store Nook’s Cranny was selling sparklers, and a party popper. Nook Stop located in the Residential Service building (or tent), is currently selling a 2022 balloon archway, and more decorations.
4. Outdoor Activities
If you’re like me and don’t enjoy many outdoor activities due to bugs, or if fishing just isn’t your thing, you’ll like being outdoorsy in this game. You can do these activities in the game, and have a blast! One of my favorite in-game pastimes is fishing, which I absolutely cannot stand in real life. It’s boring and you have to use bait and the fish are really slimy. Although, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t wasted hours on end just catching fish, sharks and squid in this game.
5. Gardening
The gardening in this game is very fulfilling, I’ve wanted to get into gardening for a long time but never did because of the commitment of needing to water the plant and make sure it has all the sun it needs. Gardening in Animal Crossing is fun and only takes a few days for fruit or vegetables to be produced. You can even plant money trees!
6. Local Play
Do you want to share your island experience with a member of your household? If you have more than one profile on your Nintendo Switch, you can play with someone else for twice the amount of fun. My fiancée and I have spent 48+ hours on this game already, since we just received it for Christmas. It’s become a part of our daily routine, we even go on virtual dates!
